Eating Soy Improves Health in Some Breast Cancers

There has been conflicting advice about whether or not eating soy and soy isoflavones is harmful if you’re at risk or have had breast cancer. New research has shown a positive effect on the health in those with some types of breast cancer with the regular consumption of soy.

Is Soy Safe? - Plant Based Dietitian

Soy

An epidemiological analysis of data from more than 6,000 American and Canadian women with breast cancer finds that post-diagnosis consumption of foods containing isoflavones — estrogen-like compounds primarily found in soy food — is associated with a 21 percent decrease in all-cause mortality. This decrease was seen only in women with hormone-receptor-negative tumors, and in women who were not treated with endocrine therapy such as tamoxifen. [Read more…]

Beet Juice Increases Muscle Power?

Just the thought of beets puts a sour look on most peoples’ faces. I’m one of the few who loves beets, red or gold, hot or cold. You either love ’em or hate ’em. Now there’s a reason to at least try them.

Scientists have evidence that Popeye was right: spinach makes you stronger. But it’s the high nitrate content in the leafy greens — not the iron — that creates the effect. Building on a growing body of work that suggests dietary nitrate improves muscle performance in many elite athletes, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that drinking concentrated beet juice — also high in nitrates — increases muscle power in patients with heart failure.” (Cardiology fellow Nishtha Sodhi, M.D)….According to the study authors, including Andrew Coggan, Ph.D., and Linda Peterson, M.D., the magnitude of the improvement is comparable to that seen in heart failure patients who have done two to three months of resistance training.  (Credit: Robert Boston)
Spinach, beets, celery and leafy greens like arugula all contain Nitrates which when broken down in our body’s metabolic chemical pathways, produces Nitric Acid.
Nitric acid causes our blood vessels to dilate, and relax, which allows for greater flow of blood to our organs and muscles. Increasing the relaxation of blood vessels improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscles when there is increase demand, such as during exercise.

“It’s a small study, but we see robust changes in muscle power about two hours after patients drink the beet juice,” said senior author Linda R. Peterson, MD, associate professor of medicine. “A lot of the activities of daily living are power-based — getting out of a chair, lifting groceries, climbing stairs. And they have a major impact on quality of life. We want to help make people more powerful because power is such an important predictor of how well people do, whether they have heart failure, cancer or other conditions. In general, physically more powerful people live longer.”

Sun Damage Continues On After Exposure

A recent study has demonstrated that UV damage continues on for hours after exposure to the sun.  Once you come into the shade, you are not safe, it seems. There appears to be a cellular process which begins with the sun’s rays shining down upon your skin, and then keeps going for hours, even increasing the damage over time.

Here’s to Disease Prevetion and Long Life!

For four years now, I have been drinking it and slathering it on my skin, with no new skin cancers showing up, and a heck of a lot more energy.  The “It” is Resveratrol, and over the past 10 years, myriads of research studies have been completed showing the promise of many health benefits. There are still questions to be answered, and on going research trying to find those answers (just go to pubmed.gov, type “resveratrol” in the search box).

The Precious Layers of Our Skin and Why They Need Protecting

I’ve just returned from a visit to my Dermatologist, and started to think about the different layers of our skin and how skin cancers or age spots form. What is each layer made up of and what does it do? We know there are three main layers – the Epidermis (top layer), the Dermis (middle with everything that keeps our face “up”) and the Hypodermis (the base).  Although this may be a little scientific to understand, I hope to provide a description of what each layer of our skin is made up of and how our skin protects us!

Anti-Aging Health Benefits of Resveratrol?

Recent scientific research in the laboratory has shown that the benefits of resveratrol from the skins and seeds of red grapes include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effect, cellular energy production and cancer cell suppression.

“Resveratrol has been found to inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in a number of cancer cell lines…. inhibit the activity of several inflammatory enzymes…” Oregon State University, Linus Pauling Institute

“Over the last decade, Sinclair and colleagues including Leonard Guarente at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have published a body of research describing how resveratrol improves energy production and overall health in cells by activating a class of genes called sirtuins that are integral to mitochondrial function. The cell’s power supplier, mitochondria are essential not just for longevity but for overall health.” Science Daily [Read more…]

Drink Your Sunscreen?

Sun damage, sun protection, Vitamin D deficiency and skin cancer are health topics being discussed every where you turn. We are told to slather on sunscreen (SPF 30 is sufficient), wear protective clothing, stay out of the sun at peak hours, yet our bodies need enough natural sunlight to assist in making Vitamin D, which has great influence in our immune systems.
Although the treatment of skin cancer is very effective, the best treatment remains prevention. Preventative measures include sun exposure avoidance, protective clothing, and full-spectrum sunscreen.” http://dermatology.cdlib.org/133/reviews/DNA/scheinfeld.html
Scientific research is beginning to look at ingredients that, taken internally, can provide protection from ultraviolet damage. One “Internal Sunscreen” ingredient is Polypodium leucotomos, also known as Polypodium extract.

One study, “Orally administered Polypodium leucotomos extract decreases psoralen-UVA induced phototoxicity, pigmentation, and damage of human skin“, produced these findings:

Clinically, phototoxicity was always lower in PL-treated skin after 48 to 72 hours (P<.005), and pigmentation was also reduced 4 months later. Histologically, PL-treated skin showed a significant numeric reduction of sunburn cells (P=.05), preservation of Langerhans cells (P< or =.01), decrease of tryptase-positive mast cell infiltration (P<.05), and decrease of vasodilation (P< or =.01).”  J Am Acad Dermatol. 2004 Jan;50(1):41-9.

In simple terms, over a 4 month period of time, study subjects ingesting Polypodium were less inclined to sunburn, preserved their healthy new skin cells, and decreased the effects of sun burn two to three days after sun exposure.

I have been hearing testimonials from those drinking Polypodium in Lifeoxylin Cellular Defense Elixir who are reporting very little, if any, sun burn after hours of summer sun exposure. The nice thing about drinking your sunscreen is that you can now get your daily dose of sunshine to help your body make Vitamin D, and not have to worry as much about sun damage to your skin, the affects it has on accelerating your skin’s aging appearance, and developing sun/age spots. Who doesn’t want more protection from skin cancer if there is any chance.

While there is still more research to be done, I will drink my sunscreen every single day!

How to Tweak, Update or Overhaul Your Personal Image

It just happens. Your life is busy, time flies by, and the next thing you know you are ambushed by Stacy and Clinton from “What Not to Wear”! Well, almost.

This is when you realize your skin is starting to sag,  gray hairs are springing up, you can’t find your makeup colors at the store because they’re no longer being made, your pants all have elastic waistbands, and your kids cringe when you get out of the car in public. Is this you? This was me. My daughter did send in a request for Stacy and Clinton to work their magic on me. Twice. I don’t need to say anymore!

I kind of lost myself in everyone else’s lives and let my own go.  As time went on, and the kids became more independent, I could see my light at the end of the “mommy” tunnel. I took on a new job, and started a new business. Being back in the “real world” caused me to take stock of my public image, and realize that I needed to make changes in order to be someone people were proud to be around, happy to be seen in public with, and someone my family and colleagues could look up to.

Here are my tips from my tweaks, updates and overhaul over the past couple of years: [Read more…]
