Exactly How Does Our Skin Age?

Do you know how your skin ages from the inside out? We commonly take for granted that our skin as a protective external envelope, without fully considering the numerous, essential functions it provides. Skin is our largest organ, providing an interface between our internal physiological systems and the external world; it protects us from harm due to pathogens, solar radiation, pollutants, and also acts as effective barrier against water loss, ensuring essential nutrients remain in our systems. As we age, skin becomes thinner, drier, and less capable of healing itself . . .

When considering the aging process and skin, there are two major types of aging to consider:

  1. Intrinsic Aging – also known as chronological or natural aging – is caused by changes in the structure and function of skin that occur as we age naturally. Beginning around out mid-20s, physiological changes cause collagen production to slow and skin to loose its elasticity. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly, and the turnover of new cells begins to slow. Additionally, changes in hormone levels reduce the amount of oil produced, resulting in dry, akey skin.
  2.  Extrinsic Aging – results when exposure to external factors prematurely ages our skin. Numerous factors can negatively affect the skin, the most common of which is sun exposure (extrinsic aging is, therefore, often referred to as photoaging). Other factors include pollution, poor diet, cigarette smoke, stress, and gravity. Exposure results in skin with age spots, blotchy pigmentation, deep wrinkles, and a rough, leathery appearance.

Extrinsic Aging accounts for 90% of the visible signs of aging!

As natural and external processes take their toll, our systems experience oxidative stress, hormone fluctuations, decreases in metabolic activity, and declines in the length of cell life. The effects of both intrinsic aging and extrinsic are visibly seen in the skin: collagen production diminishes and elastin becomes less springy, resulting in less voluminous and elastic skin that sags and wrinkles easily. Skin becomes less moisturized naturally, and exposure to the elements causes hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and reduces the skin’s ability to hold in moisture. Intrinsic and extrinsic processes are linked; as natural changes take place, our ability to fight the deleterious effects of environmental exposure decreases.

  • Between ages 20 and 80 our collagen production declines by 65%

Skin thins at a rate of 6% per 10 years

“We cannot stop ourselves from aging, we can age gracefully by caring for our skin and reducing our exposure to the harmful factors that cause aging”

While intrinsic processes mean we cannot stop ourselves from aging, we can age gracefully by caring for our skin and reducing our exposure to the harmful factors that cause aging. Be- cause the skin is an organ, it can benefit from products that protect skin and encourage skin regeneration topically, and well as ingested supplements that help maintain healthy system function.

Apriori BeautyTM has taken advantage of this concept by creating an internal and external system enhanced with the patent pending Nutrient ReservoirTM, which delivers essential ingredients to protect and prolong the life of every skin cell while combating the damage we’ve already done, effectively reducing the visible signs of aging. These ingredients protect from the 4 Core Influences of Aging, providing:

  1. Antioxidants to reduce the effects of oxidative stress
  2. Endocrine system modulators to mediate hormone fluctuations
  3. Energy Activators to help promote mitochondrial and metabolic efficiency
  4. Longevity Gene Supporters to extend the life of healthy cells

Pomegranates are Good for Your Skin!

Our skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside our body, so it only makes sense to nourish and protect our skin by taking in foods that soothe and calm our inflammation. Pomegranate fruit is one such food that has a great effect on the inside of our body, and can help our skin become more beautiful as well!

Pomegranate!

Pomegranate fruit is rich in two types of polyphenolic compounds, anthocyanins and hydrolysable tannins, and is known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have demonstrated the potential for clinical use of pomegranate in the prevention and treatment of cancer (1), and its anti-inflammatory properties make it useful for addressing other diseases where chronic inflammation plays a critical role (2). It is also known to promote cardiovascular health by preventing low-density lipoprotein oxidation, reducing blood pressure and slowing the development of atherosclerosis (3).

Eating Soy Improves Health in Some Breast Cancers

There has been conflicting advice about whether or not eating soy and soy isoflavones is harmful if you’re at risk or have had breast cancer. New research has shown a positive effect on the health in those with some types of breast cancer with the regular consumption of soy.

Is Soy Safe? - Plant Based Dietitian

Soy

An epidemiological analysis of data from more than 6,000 American and Canadian women with breast cancer finds that post-diagnosis consumption of foods containing isoflavones — estrogen-like compounds primarily found in soy food — is associated with a 21 percent decrease in all-cause mortality. This decrease was seen only in women with hormone-receptor-negative tumors, and in women who were not treated with endocrine therapy such as tamoxifen. [Read more…]

4 Steps to Applying Skin Care for Greatest Benefit

Do we know if the order of applying our skin care products aids or deters them being absorbed fully, giving us the full benefits of our products? Dermatology researchers now tell us it is important to prioritize the order in which we apply our cleansers, serums, medications and lotions.

Cleanse facial skin first

“Medications or treatments should be applied directly after washing your face,” said board-certified dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD. “This ensures that the medications or treatments are properly absorbed by the skin. Otherwise, people may think a product isn’t working because it’s applied in the wrong order.”

My experience goes along with what Dr. Taylor suggests as the optimum order of application: [Read more…]

7 Tips to Keep Your Skin Moist in Cold, Dry Weather

The winds are beginning to blow, and heaters are being turned on everywhere you go! Do you struggle with dry, flaking, itchy skin in the winter?

When that unpleasant chill hits the air, it’s time to get tips on how to keep your skin hydrated in the wintertime. Dryness can be uncomfortable, and it’s important to defend yourself against the elements in order to maintain smoothness and suppleness all season long. Keeping skin beautiful and hydrated in colder weather calls for both internal and external care.

Soft, hydrated skin!

Dry skin care tips for Morning

  • Wash your face with lukewarm water—not too hot and not too cold— to wake yourself up without drying the skin or constricting your pores.
  • Cleanse your skin with a sulfate-free cleanser. Sulfates are extremely drying and irritating to the skin. In addition, lathering bar soaps and strong foaming face washes strip the skin of its natural protective water and oils.  Celloxylin Step 1. Crème Cleanse!
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. As you probably already know, moisturizing is key for dry skin types. Apply your moisturizer right after cleansing to lock in the water before it evaporates. Look for a moisturizer with a broad spectrum SPF to protect against the sun’s damaging rays. Celloxylin Step 5. Day Defense Plus, Broad Spectrum SPF 25

Dry skin care tips for Day

  • Your skin will dry out as it’s exposed to the elements throughout the day. That’s why it’s important to re-apply moisturizer whenever you notice your skin becoming dry. Carry a moisturizer in your bag so you can dab a little on whenever necessary.  Celloxylin Hydro-Burst Moisture Intense Lotion.
Drink water. It may seem obvious, but sipping on water throughout the day naturally keeps your body— and by extension— your skin cells, hydrated.

Dry skin care tips for Night

  • At night, once again cleanse your skin of makeup and the day’s pollutants with a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser using lukewarm water
  • Immediately after, apply a heavier moisturizer or cream that will sink in throughout the night. Rich creams are dry skin’s best friend. Look for creams containing nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin or oils such as olive, and coconut oil. While these thicker lotions are too heavy for the day, the night gives your skin plenty of time to absorb all of their hydrating properties. Try our Celloxylin Step 5. Night Repair 3Deep!

Cleansing to Nourish and Protect Your Skin

Cleansing helps remove dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin’s surface and in pores. It is the first step in improving skin appearance, preventing blemishes, discoloration, inflammation, and general dullness. It is also the first step in nourishing skin and protecting the delicate structure that keeps skin functioning in a healthful manner!

http://www.useloveshare.com/FIC/candace/product/?i=7

When cleansing, it is essential that you choose a product that is gentle, natural, and devoid of harsh, irritating ingredients. Unfortunately, many cleansing products are designed with soaps and surfactants that can actually strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it tight, dry, and susceptible to irritation. If you’ve ever washed your skin and feel it pull tight against your face afterwards, it’s likely that you have disrupted the natural layer that protects skin against bacteria and moisture loss. Bye Bye Microbeads

Microbeads are now a thing of the past. Once advertised as a great way to mechanically exfoliate your skin, research from Oregon State University has found them to negatively affect the environment. Once microbeads have worked to remove your dead skin cells, they don’t dissolve, and as they float away through your plumbing, they move along out to the ocean where sea life consume them. Microbeads then become a part of the food chain when we eat fish and other sea creatures who ingest the beads. This is something I really don’t want to think about too long. You, either?

http://www.scienceworldreport.com/articles/30178/20150918/8-trillion-tiny-microbeads-enter-water-sources-each-day-scientists.htm

Now there is a ban on products containing microbeads, which leads all of us regular mechanical exfoliators to proclaim “now what will we do?”

I have a great remedy, even better than microbeads, and it’s been around a long, long time – think even your great, great grandmother used it! It’s granulated sugar. Yes, sugar.

Sugar scrubs and sugaring have been shown to be excellent exfoliators, and as lovely as massaging sugar over our skin sounds, it is wonderful in case some slips into your mouth (versus a microbead!). The most wonderful thing I love about the effectiveness of a sugar scrub, besides that it really does move the old skin cells along beautifully, preventing ingrown hairs and giving a much smoother shaving experience, is that is melts as you massage it into your skin. No more fish ingesting beads!

Apriori Beauty’s Sugar Beet Crystal Scrub!

I love the Sugar Beet Crystal and Enzyme Activated Scrub from Apriori Beauty. Great for your face and body. Very, very gritty, giving you an excellent exfoliation, and dissolves as you continue to massage it around.

Testimonial:

The Enzyme Activated Micro Scrub is my little heaven in a bottle! I have found that when I exfoliate correctly and hydrate my skin with the nutrients in the entire Celloxylin line, my skin is finally normalized. I received a facial the other day and the therapist must have asked me four times, “What products do you use?” I am so happy with my results..!

Ultrasound Speeds Wound Healing

A recent study using ultrasound therapy on wounds of diabetics and the elderly has shown some very promising results for decreasing time for healing. This will be such a great treatment, especially for those with diabetes, who have poor circulation, with wound infections which sometimes progress into very serious infections.

“Healing times for skin ulcers and bedsores can be reduced by a third with the use of low-intensity ultrasound, scientists from the University of Sheffield and University of Bristol have found.”   – Science Daily

Why Acetyl Octapeptide-3 is Better Than Injectables

I don’t use facial injectables as part of my beauty regimen, so when I have a chance to observe, fairly up close, someone who does, it interests me. I like to watch how her facial muscles contract, or not, how her emotions are expressed on her face matching the varying tones of her conversation, then try to guess which areas the formulas have been injected. I wonder if prolonged use of injectables does long term damage to the nerves, muscles and circulation within the tissues. I also wonder if the tissue “stretches” to accommodate the added volume, and if over time and with loss of collagen and elastin, will the area require more filler to keep it up, and if the tissue will eventually sag even more.

Someone I observed recently, was seated next to me at a luncheon. As we were chatting, I thought to myself back to the last time we had chatted, which was over a year ago. Then I thought she looked different, which was when it dawned on me she had had some cosmetic support as I noticed her forehead not moving and very little facial movement during the course of our hour long conversation. If I hadn’t honed in on her facial movement, or lack thereof, I would have left thinking how youthful and beautiful she looked. And she really did look lovely.

How to Enjoy the Sun and Protect Your Skin!

Ever wonder how those beautiful, warm rays of the sun can have such long lasting and damaging effects on your skin?

Like a straightened rainbow, you can picture the spectrum of sunlight with the red, orange and yellow wavelengths being the longest and making up infrared light.  As wavelengths shorten, green and blue light speeds up into indigo blue and violet colors, which are visible and contain Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B rays.  These are the rays that cause sun damage to our skin.
