AGE SPOTS: What They Are and How to Remove Them

AGE SPOTS are flat, gray, brown or black colored spots on the back of your hands, tops of your arms, shoulders, and your face. As we age, they start to show up increasingly. Here’s how they came about and some options of how to get rid of them!

They just suddenly showed up one day, but not really. They are the result of years in the sun, and, according to The Mayo Clinic, usually present around the age of forty, although they can present in younger people.

Age spots can look cancerous, but they are not – the worst part is how they look and that they are there to begin with! You can bleach or lighten them or have them removed, but the best thing is to prevent them in the first place by using sunscreen and avoiding overexposure to the sun.

How do age spots form?

“Ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates the production of melanin. Melanin is the dark pigment in the epidermis that gives your skin its normal color. The extra melanin — produced to protect the deeper layers of your skin — creates the darker color of a tan. Age spots develop when the extra melanin becomes “clumped” or is produced in higher concentrations than normal.

Most often, it takes years of sun exposure for these dark spots to occur — they typically develop very slowly over time. Using commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds can eventually result in the same changes.” http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/age-spots/DS00912

Treatment Options:

FIRST! Go to your dermatologist and GET THEM CHECKED! Your doctor will tell you what the spots are, and if they need additional medical tests or treatments, or if you are clear to use something to lighten or remove them.

If you get the “All Clear”, some options you have are:

~ Bleaching Creams that lighten the spots over time

~ Laser Therapy which kill the cells that make the dark spots without harming the skin

~ Freezing (cryotherapy) which also destroys the dark spots but can leave a scar

~ Dermabrasion which uses rotating brushes to remove the top layers of skin and can leave a scab

~ Chemical Peels which use strong acids to chemically burn off the top layers of skin
