Peptides for a Younger Looking You

Ever wondered what those magical ingredients were in your anti-aging products and what they actually did to decrease aging’s effects on your skin? Peptides are one of anti-aging’s most desired ingredients, because of the effects they have on the natural support structures within your skin. They are short sequences of amino acids linked by peptide bonds that are similar in structure to proteins, but shorter in length.

Peptides

They play a significant role in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis. Collagen and elastin are the flexible lattice within the skin that helps maintain its structure and youthful elasticity. Some also block the transmission of nerve signals to facial muscles. Beautiful Memory

Taking a breath or two, enjoying the beauty around me, and recalling found memories again of when I lived in Lausanne 35 years ago. This is pretty close to the view from my window, (without the steeples) of the majestic French – Swiss Alps in the spring.

Where does your mind wander to when you think of a place of beauty?

Thinking thoughts of peace, beauty, and nature calms me and makes me smile.

Happy Spring!

Beauty that Restores Peace

When life is overwhelming, we are stretched beyond ourselves, and we become more stressed and anxious, it is time to go to a quiet, peaceful, place and bring some calm into the chaos. Colors bring peace to me, along with scenes of nature that I can focus on, imagine myself in the midst of, and restore my soul through the magnificence of beauty.

This past year has been one of the most overwhelming of my life. I need to make a conscious effort each day to find peace and rest for my soul. This photo, with the stunning hue of the bluebonnets, strength of the forest, refreshing of the foggy mist, and symbolism of the gently winding path, spoke  great peace to me.

I have a thing for forests. When I lived in Switzerland, there was a trail I would walk that would give me great peace and tranquility. I would hike up to a large fallen tree, lay on its strong trunk and look up at the sky, watching the high above branches sway in the breeze and the clouds pass through the rays of sunshine. When I saw this photo of the stunning floral landscape in my favorite color, amidst the gentle forest, I sighed, a deep, anxiety-releasing, relaxing sigh. I share it with you here, and hope you will click through to the photographer’s site to refresh your soul with more of his amazing photography.

The creator of this lovely forest in Hallerbos, Belgium, is no other than Our Lord God. The photographer, Kilian Schonberger, provides additional photos of this lovely scene at My Modern Met

Enjoy!

New Findings: Why A Good Night of Sleep is Even More Important

When it takes you a long time to fall asleep night after night, or you’re not getting enough hours of restful sleep, your brain feels foggy and after a night or two, you aren’t thinking clearly, becoming cranky, and your resistance to illness runs low. We all know how important a good night of rest is for our health, mental well being and beauty.

Getting a good night's sleep.

Essentially all neurodegenerative diseases are associated with the accumulation of cellular waste products,” said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., co-director of the URMC Center for Translational Neuromedicine, via ScienceDaily.

Recent research has found that while we sleep, our brain cells actually shrink by 60% allowing the brain’s “waste management”/flushing fluid glymphactic system to be activated similarly to the night shift cleaning crew in an office complex. They clean out all the toxins and debris of the day, including bad proteins like beta amyloids, which build up in people with Alzheimer’s Disease. The flushing system is nearly 10 times more active during restful sleep, and with the smaller brain cells providing more space for the fluid to flush through easily, a wonderful natural cleaning takes place.

The brain is surrounded by a membrane called the arachnoid and bathed in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). CSF flows into the interior of the brain through the same pathways as the arteries that carry blood. This parallel system is akin to a donut shaped pipe within a pipe, with the inner ring carrying blood and the outer ring carrying CSF. The CSF is draw into brain tissue via a system of conduits that are controlled by a type support cells in the brain known as glia, in this case astrocytes.

Where does the dirty glymphatic fluid go after it leaves the brain? It leaves the brain through the cerebralspinal fluid, enters the blood stream and on to the liver for detoxification. If you are drinking alcohol in the evening or have any time of problem in your liver that deters this detoxification or filtering process, then the toxins accumulate in the liver and other organs.

How much sleep is enough for a good cleaning? 7 hours of uninterrupted, restful sleep.

How can you help yourself get a full night of sleep each night?  Here are my 5 Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

I use the Melatonin Sleep Spray regularly, which is made a huge difference in the quality and amount of restful sleep I achieve each night. After all, restful sleep is very important for your skin health and beauty as I share inWhat Does Sleep Do For Your Skin?

Cheers to wonderful nights of restful sleep!

Sleep Deprived?

Don’t you just love a good night of long, restful sleep? You have more energy, look and feel so much better, and it seems you can handle the stress that comes with each day a little better. With increased technology, it’s harder to step away from the continuous access to information and communication. The availability of “energy” drinks that help keep our batteries charged, especially when we are stressed and tired. As the pressure and demands of each day increase or don’t let up, the lack of restful sleep can take it’s toll on your mental and physical health

I KNOW that a good night of sleep definitely shows in my skin and my appearance. (Read more about it in “What Does Sleep Do For Your Skin?”)

More and more people are asking their doctors to write them a prescription for a sleep aid. Is this the best answer? Sleep aids are one of the top 3 categories of prescribed drugs. They are also considered one of the leading categories of abused substances. All of the common prescription drugs carry significant and severe warnings. All speak of reported mental problems; depression; addiction; bizarre, even suicidal behavior; sleepwalking; physical problems, such as heartburn, drug hangover; fatigue; drowsiness; and liver damage. That One Little Thing

The one little thing that maybe just doesn’t turn out quite right can really mess with your day. Have you ever noticed? How your hair looks, feeling a little thicker than usual in your clothes, or a few extra eye wrinkles affect how we perceive ourselves.

On the other hand, you feel a lilt of confidence when your hair turns out great. There’s a hint of mischief in the air when you wear a hat. Your favorite colors worn all day keep you happy. Looking at a special piece of jewelry you chose to adorn your jacket with makes you feel special and brings a memory to warm your heart throughout the day. [Read more…]

skin-tonerWhen should I start using anti-aging skin care products? How does my skin and appearance change as I go through life? What can I do to slow it down, or prevent it from showing these changes?

Great questions I’m asked often, most recently by a beautiful 20-something as we were chatting about the biggest problem she has with her skin right now. Surprisingly, it was the beginnings of eye and lip wrinkles!

Poised, Confident and Gracious

These are the 2012 Ms. America pageant contestants who I was thrilled to meet last week when Apriori Beauty sponsored their Day of Beauty. Which one is me? Rather “where’s Waldo-ette”? Haha!

What struck me the most with each one of these most lovely ladies, was their poise, confidence and graciousness. Yes, they were beautiful to the eye, gorgeous in every way, yet while I was talking to each, I was more struck by their internal qualities which brought out their external beauty so much more. My First Memories of Beauty…..

As I was thinking of the first time I realized someone was beautiful, I found myself smiling. She was my kindergarten teacher, who made an incredible impression on a  little five year old.

Strikingly tall, (wasn’t everyone back then?), gorgeous full face, impeccably dressed with loveliness and grace pouring from her every move -and kindness in her eyes.  I can still see her stylish outfits, impeccably styled hair, classic pumps and most of all, her jewelry. She wore the most colorful and fashionable earrings, necklaces and bracelets, matching each outfit perfectly. I still cannot figure out how she helped us paste and paint, wrote on the chalkboard, played on the playground, and assigned the magic nap time fairy wand, all the while maintaining her poise, confidence and graciousness. I think her loving and kind heart was where her true beauty came from, shown to the world through her grace, framed by her incredible poise, style and fashion.

My second beauty memory was in high school, a time where peer pressure dictates every thought and move. I was in a social group of girls who thought pretty highly of themselves, getting their kicks out of ridiculing anyone who did not meet their standards. Yet, there was another teacher, this one in her late fifties, who “had our number”. She had such a love in her heart for young ladies, with the desire to see us become women of grace and beauty. I was always uncomfortable with how my peers treated her, and stayed on their periphery because deep down I really admired her, and wanted to be as elegant and graceful as she.  Her outfits were right out of fashion magazines, her makeup flawless, and her hair so stylish for someone of “her age”.  She looked at me often as she taught, as I think she saw a very hungry soul behind my eyes.

It has been a long journey for me to feel comfortable in my body, especially my height. My life has brought experiences, people and times of reflection that have helped me to feel beautiful from the inside out. I know that many of you face the same struggles with your appearance and personal image as I. Deep down you desire to make peace with your past, accept the features you were born with, and begin to exude confidence in who you are for the rest of your life.

My two teachers’  inner beauty, confidence, strength and acceptance of their God-given physical characteristics  made a great impression on this young lady who was watching. I wonder who is watching us today and who will be impressed to become all that he/she can be by observing us?

Shy Anna by mainec6“I’m Looking Fabulous” is my place where I hope to share some of my wonderful findings along  life’s journey that have helped me to look and feel more confident. Here, I will introduce you to some very special people who are passionate about making your life’s journey more beautiful, enjoyable and fulfilling!

Welcome to “I’m Looking Fabulous’!
