Which Kentucky Derby Hat is You?

The Kentucky Derby is such a fun and frolicky annual horse race, filled with tradition and beauty. From the gorgeous horses to the traditional mint juleps, there is anticipation and excitement in the air. What I love most about the Kentucky Derby is selecting “my” horse to cheer on and, always, seeing the beautiful hats on display everywhere!

“The long-established fashion was started with Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr.’s vision for the Derby as an event that the high-class would attend, similar to European-style racing events, which mandated full morning dress for men and women. For the first running of the Kentucky Derby, he used high-class women to recruit his target clientele to attend the race. The event quickly became just as much about the fashion as the racing. Going to a horse racing event became an opportunity to show off the latest in spring fashion and women were known to coordinate their hats, dresses, bags, shoes, and even parasols.” *

I’m posting a few hats for you to enjoy from the official Kentucky Derby website as well as my personal choice if I were going this year!

  1. Playful and fun!

2. “Look at me!” (I like the shoulder sun protection this hat offers!)

3. This one has the floral embellishment underneath the brim – beautiful!

4. Such fun for men, too!

5. My choice from Berkeley Hats (where you will find many, many more lovely hats to order!)

Cheers to a great race and very fun day!

Fall-Winter 2016 Chanel Haute Couture

Chanel’s Haute Couture fashions are reminiscent of the late 70’s early 80’s this year. Gaucho’s are back, with long jacket-coats, mostly in tweeds – coarse, fine, embellished and appliqued. Midi-length skirts are definitely there, as are squared and boxy shoulders, high sitting collars and drop waists. There is a feel of a Russian Cossack or two, and the thigh high black boot is everywhere. A few sparkles thrown in with some feathers and flounce, there was much overall body coverage to this year’s presentation.

Most of all, I really liked the runway setting within mock designer-seamstress-tailor open rooms, as the fashion designers worked away, while the models strutted by. Very nice!

Fall 2016 Ready to Wear

The Ralph Lauren Ready to Wear Collection has always been a standby for me. The fabrics are solid, sizing a little roomier for a fuller figure, and colors classic. This year’s fall collection was true to the Ralph Lauren roots:

“The show opened with a passage of neutral looks, and the first models came out wearing billowing high-waisted pants and neatly tailored blazers in shades of beige, a color that has long been a Lauren signature. That monochromatic styling made way for more distinctive themes, starting with the plaid-on-plaid knit tube skirts and fringed capes, and a Navajo-inspired jacket that managed to conjure the outdoorsy spirit of the English countryside and an arid landscape of the American West all at once. One of the most appealing coats in the collection had a cozy, robelike silhouette and was cut from a patchwork of tweeds that could have been swiped straight from Sherlock Holmes’s closet.” Vogue

Spring-Summer 2016 Fashion

Chanel Spring 2016 is showing vibrant colors, bold prints, flowing fabric and many layers.

Love the setting, but not the eye shadow. Interesting shoes, matching bolero hats, and classic Chanel.

Enjoy!

A Little Bit of Tiffany

While looking for a keepsake piece of jewelry for my daughter recently, I discovered that Tiffany & Co. now offers lovely affordable pieces, allowing ones on a smaller budget to begin a collection.

I really love these basic bead earrings:

Easy Healthy Self Tanner

Easy Healthy Self Tanner, by Candy Dye

I have a new twist to my nourishing body moisturizer that adds a little color to my hidden-from-the-sun pale skin. This little twist is a creamy veil that I add a little (or a lot) to my dollop of body lotion. It allows me to control level of intensity of color shade, so that as summer goes on, and my skin picks up a little color of it’s own, I can minimize or maximize the color. [Read more…]

Kentucky Derby Hats

Kentucky Derby hats are my favorites because they are pretty much a mandatory part of the outfit which sets the fun, frolicky, dressy tone for the day. The rainbow of colors seen on a sea of heads create a much anticipated show of fashion and frivolity. Broad, lipsticked smiles on made up faces, matching tea party dresses and mint juleps in hand, are ready for the cameras and much anticipated race.

Here are some of my favorites from last year’s Derby:

Finding a New Hairstyle

My hair is hitting my shoulders, all one length now and I’m getting tired of it falling forward. Blessed with very thick hair, it is starting to bug me all day.

Thinking should I cut it short again? Ah freedom! But then there will be the curling iron to keep all the cowlicks calmed down. Should I layer the length I have now? Should I go longer? So I looked around and here are my finalists:

The Short Bob:

The Shoulder Shag:

Loose Curls at the Chin:

The Jane:

And The Jen:

A few details to help you decide: I’m 5’10” tall, with a very long neck and a small (“pea”) head.

Which one do you pick for me??

“Hats Encouraged”

I’ve been invited to a Ladies Tea with a philanthropic group I belong to, and the embossed invitation reads “Hats Encouraged.”

I’m hat and “hat outfit” shopping now. The ladies in this group wear dresses and dress suits to the meetings, but, alas, I no longer have ankles that should see the light of day. Thinking a dressy maxi with jacket, or dressy pantsuit. Do I shop hat first, then outfit or clothes first, then hat? I think I will look for a hat first!

Who does hats the best? The Kentucky Derby! Here are some I love for inspiration.

White is always elegant. Here Rebecca Romijn is in her white Kentucky Derby hat with a baby blue accent.

Dream Suits

I’m looking to update my business wardrobe with a few new suits, and was browsing around. Maybe I browsed too long, or on an empty stomach, because I found myself on sites I mostly can’t afford, or have the girlish figure to even think about them seriously.

It was fun to dream, so here are my picks:

What Do the Colors You Wear Say About You?

I always find it interesting when you see a common color worn on any given day. Color has meaning, and the choices of color we wear each day has a significance, sending a particular message. Whether you select a certain color because it feels comfortable and nourishes your spirit, or you want to make a statement / send a message, color has meaning and is part of our body language.

What do colors mean? The following is taken directly from an article on Color Psychology:

miLvggk by pitabox987Black
Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black. [Read more…]

Cute and Functional Evening Clutch

Do you have a favorite clutch that you use when you go to a fancy event? I’ve not been able to find one that fits everything I like to carry, and is easy to close after I have all my “must bring alongs” inside.

Until now.

I found the greatest little black clutch, shaped like a large, old fashioned cigarette box, that has all the compartments neatly organized for me.

clutch 1

See the cute little area for your cocktail and valet dollar bills, the pocket to hold your business cards, the slits to neatly nestle your drivers license for when you are carded (dreaming), and a credit card or two, and I even tucked in a tube of lipstick and my cell phone!

Fits so easily in my hand, or under my arm. The outer fabric is embossed with a sort of reptile skin design, and will lie nice and flat on my lap under my dinner napkin and won’t slide off my lap. AND, I found it at Target, by Mossimo. Less tha $20. Tres chic!
