“Hats Encouraged”

I’ve been invited to a Ladies Tea with a philanthropic group I belong to, and the embossed invitation reads “Hats Encouraged.”

I’m hat and “hat outfit” shopping now. The ladies in this group wear dresses and dress suits to the meetings, but, alas, I no longer have ankles that should see the light of day. Thinking a dressy maxi with jacket, or dressy pantsuit. Do I shop hat first, then outfit or clothes first, then hat? I think I will look for a hat first!

Who does hats the best? The Kentucky Derby! Here are some I love for inspiration.

White is always elegant. Here Rebecca Romijn is in her white Kentucky Derby hat with a baby blue accent.

Dream Suits

I’m looking to update my business wardrobe with a few new suits, and was browsing around. Maybe I browsed too long, or on an empty stomach, because I found myself on sites I mostly can’t afford, or have the girlish figure to even think about them seriously.

It was fun to dream, so here are my picks:

What Do the Colors You Wear Say About You?

I always find it interesting when you see a common color worn on any given day. Color has meaning, and the choices of color we wear each day has a significance, sending a particular message. Whether you select a certain color because it feels comfortable and nourishes your spirit, or you want to make a statement / send a message, color has meaning and is part of our body language.

What do colors mean? The following is taken directly from an article on Color Psychology:

miLvggk by pitabox987Black
Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black. [Read more…]

Sneakers – With Everything???

The Chanel Spring-Summer 2014 Collection is filled with pastels, shimmer, mid-drifts and SNEAKERS!!

My first thought was – finally, some comfortable shoes!

Then I watched the models walking, even skipping through the show, and was saddened how the sneakers seemed to dress down the elegance of everything, especially the bridal gown at the end. I’m definitely more than ready for comfortable shoes to skip around in all day, but with everything?

What do you think?

Choosing a Gown

Finding a gown for a formal occasion is what I’m up to lately. What do you think of the three I’ve narrowed down?

Cute and Functional Evening Clutch

Do you have a favorite clutch that you use when you go to a fancy event? I’ve not been able to find one that fits everything I like to carry, and is easy to close after I have all my “must bring alongs” inside.

Until now.

I found the greatest little black clutch, shaped like a large, old fashioned cigarette box, that has all the compartments neatly organized for me.

See the cute little area for your cocktail and valet dollar bills, the pocket to hold your business cards, the slits to neatly nestle your drivers license for when you are carded (dreaming), and a credit card or two, and I even tucked in a tube of lipstick and my cell phone!

Fits so easily in my hand, or under my arm. The outer fabric is embossed with a sort of reptile skin design, and will lie nice and flat on my lap under my dinner napkin and won’t slide off my lap. AND, I found it at Target, by Mossimo. Less tha $20. Tres chic!

The Pack is Back!

Toss out your crossbody’s and stow your totes,

backpacks are the new ‘it bag.’

That title to a recent article in the OC Register Fashion page definitely caught my eye, because my beautiful, fashion stylist daughter gave me one a few months ago, and I love it!

We’re not talking sturdy, book carrying, hiking backpack, but a more refined, purse type bag with arm straps.

Column Dressing – So Easy!

column dressing exampleLast week I attended a business luncheon at which I was seated next to a future Hall of Fame athlete. I wore a black column (black slacks and black knit sleeveless sweater), topped with a cobalt blue jacket. Pulled together very nicely, if I do say so. But, there is a funny story behind my ensemble. I was wearing my black column, topped with a lovely winter white double breasted jacket when I left the house that morning. Just before leaving my office to head over to the luncheon, our Executive Director walked by my door, and I caught a glimpse of the back of her jacket, realizing we had the EXACT same outfit on – black columns and winter white jacket. I immediately let her know that I would leave right away and stop by my house for a quick change  on the way to the luncheon.

Because I had my column on, it was so easy to run in, make a decision between a cobalt blue and kelly green blazer, and back out the door. Phew! Column dressing is so versatile, I highly recommend you have a few in your wardrobe for any occasion. [Read more…]

Spring 2013 Fashion Trends!

Mulberry White SuitJust when you were deep in the doldrums of wool and mittens, along comes the

Spring 2013 Fashion Trend Report!

Sending you over to Style.com for the full lineup of cut, color, and style chic, let me know what you love.

My favorites? Glad you asked!

Adore the Valentino in the Contrast lineup.

Veiled Beauty, Collage, and Flounce are gorgeous, and fun! Can an older woman can carry the looks? What do you think?

Alpha Females garnered most of my attention, as I have returned to the corporate world recently. I really like the Christian Dior and Stella McCartney suits – navy and white are my colors and I love the longer jacket length, hiding a bulgy hip and elongating a waistline so nicely.

My favorite is the Mulberry all white – gorgeous and oh-so Diane Keaton-esque!

Enjoy!

Tips for a Fabulous Figure

Dieting, weight loss plans, increasing exercise, going to the gym and working with a trainer all get you headed in the right direction towards a fabulous figure. Here are a few additional tips that are really important to get the success you desire.

In Science Daily’s “Top Four Reasons Diets Fail”, Jessica Bartfield,MD, internal medicine who specializes in nutrition and weight management at the Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery & Bariatric Care says “Losing weight is one of the top resolutions made every year, yet only 20 percent of people achieve successful weight-loss and maintenance.”

Dr. Bartfield breaks down the four most common things we do that prevent us from having the beautiful figure we desire:

1. Thinking that what we are eating contains less calories than it really does. I’m guilty of this one for sure! Salad dressings, certain fruits and vegetables, an extra handful of nuts, all healthy foods, but not going to help with my looking fabulous plan. She gives great tips for keeping it real.

2. Thinking we worked off more than we actually have. Walking a little more, or taking the stairs at work can help decrease the number of calories we take in, but truth be told, not as much as we would like to think. AND just  because you take the stairs a couple of times a day does not entitle you to that bag of peanut m & m’s!! So, rewarding ourselves for moving a little more is not a good idea.

3. Not keeping your blood sugar steady all day long. You know the saying about eating a solid breakfast to start the day right. I will confess my stomach just doesn’t wake up until about 10 am. A cup of coffee or two helps to get the juices flowing, but no growling until much later, and then I munch on a protein bar. Dr. Bartfield encourages us to eat a healthy snack or meal every 3 – 4 hours.

4. We don’t get enough sleep. A good night’s sleep keeps all of our “juices flowing in the right direction”, meaning that our natural hormones and everything and substances that break down what we eat will be sufficiently produced and working optimally.

This is just a quick overview in simple terms, but I highly encourage you to click on over and read the whole article – it’s also short and to the point and will help you when you are working so hard towards the most fabulous you!

Looking Fabulous Counts Every Day!

Ever had a day when your body tells you it wants comfort, warmth and a feeling of relaxation in your dress, but your head tells you to step it up for the occasion? I just did, and it was not pretty!fashion

My week was super busy, I’ve yet to find a pair of comfortable shoes to soothe my feet as I walk throughout several buildings all day long in my life as a Concierge, and the stress of getting a few extra things done abounded. When the weekend arrived, I immersed myself in dressing for comfort, as it felt so relaxing and rejuvenating. Getting ready to attend Saturday evening church services, known for a more relaxed audience, I wasn’t exactly looking very fabulous this night. [Read more…]
