I’ve been reading here and there about the health and beauty benefits of raw honey. In particular of interest to me have been the antimicrobial and healing properties raw honey provides.

My Peaceful Place

Need to find your peaceful place? When things start swirling around faster and faster, I begin to stress and sigh more. That’s when I know I need to find a peaceful place, for my heart, my mind, and my spirit. Today, I knew I needed to find mine. I like the mountains, as they help me know there is someone bigger than I am, who has everything under control.

The Italian Dolomites

Twice today, this Bible verse, found in the Isaiah 26.3, came across in my readings: “Thou shalt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” KJV

Another translation:

“People with their minds set on you, you keep completely whole, steady on their feet, because they keep at it and don’t quit. Depend on God and keep at it because in the Lord God you have a sure thing.” The Message translation.

11 More Tips for a Successful Interview

I’m conducting interviews right now, looking to add a partner with whom to share my day to day responsibilities, evening and weekend call. The job description I created states clearly what the position entails and the qualifications / qualities of the successful candidate are.

Now that a few candidates have been interviewed, I thought it might be a good time to add to my previous post sharing “Tips for Success in Your Job Interview”.

  1. Re and ReRead the Job Description. I highly recommend studying the job description, and visualizing yourself in the role. This provides a greater understanding of the point of view interview questions will be coming from, and allow you time to think of clarifying questions. You might also do an online search for descriptions of similar roles and how they function.
  2. Proofread your resume and cover letter for typos and grammar errors. Have someone who is a proficient writer also review and edit for clarity and polish. A good cover letter goes a long way in preceding your first personal meeting with a glimpse of your personality, intelligence, character, and heart.
  3. Come with additional resumes, letters of recommendation, or anything you think might be beneficial, but not overwhelming, to a first and second round interview. Offer them only if you see that it would be useful to do so, such as if there are interviewers present who have not seen your resume, you may offer them a copy.
  4. Jot down questions to bring with you to the interview. Practice these questions on someone who will provide honest and professional feedback. A question like “Why should I work for you?” may not be received very well if delivered in an overly confident way. Perhaps something along the line of “This position is of great interest to me. What will you offer as support for the new team member?”
  5. Really listen to the questions being asked and answer the question. If you don’t fully understand what is being asked, repeat the question in a little different way for clarification. Better ask for clarification than to respond to something that wasn’t being asked. Also, listen to what the interviewers are seeking to know. If you are asked how quickly you can arrive if called in, give the time it would take you if you hung up the phone and hopped in your car immediately. Then, follow up with a confirmation question asking what would be an acceptable length of time for arrival, in case you weren’t coming from home, you would know how far away you could be while on call.
  6. If you haven’t interviewed in awhile, by all means, practice with someone. Better yet, have them record your practice, and review how you come across together.
  7. When you’re asked to tell about yourself as the first question, you don’t want to spew volumes of your work history in great detail. Practice beforehand giving a one minute overview, highlighting accomplishments which would speak for your competence in the position you are interviewing for.
  8. While handshakes are good coming and going, they aren’t always necessary, and one that is too strong might not be received very well. If you’re going to shake hands, do so with the key interviewers.
  9. Always ask what the next steps will be, and the time frame for them. You may be the first to be interviewed, of which the first round process may take a few weeks. It’s good to know if you will be waiting a couple of weeks to hear for a second round interview, and who the second round will be with, so you can begin preparing right away. Make sure you let them know you are very interested in the position (if you still are) at the end of the conversation.
  10. Push in your chair once you have stood to leave. Thank the interviewers for their time, let them know it was a pleasure to meet them, and you look forward to hearing from them soon.
  11. Just like a good cover letter, a good thank you email later that day or the next morning will help solidify positive feelings about you, granted the interview went well. An excellent email thank you doesn’t require following with a handwritten note, unless it is of value as a function of the position.

Go Nuts to Calm Inflammation!

Did you know eating nuts can calm inflammation in your body? Me either! I’ve always loved nuts, but viewed them as fat, to consume as little as possible or face the scales. The past few months, I have added nuts to my diet and haven’t seen the weight gain I feared, thankfully, love the feeling of fullness and added crunch and flavor in my snacks or by themselves.  Along comes a new study with wonderful news of what consuming nuts can do for your health.

Nuts to Help Calm Your Body’s Inflammation!

“In a study of more than 5,000 people, investigators from Brigham and Women’s Hospital have found that greater intake of nuts was associated with lower levels of biomarkers of inflammation, a finding that may help explain the health benefits of nuts. The results of the study appear July 27 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”

If you were asked to participate in the study, which nuts would you like to eat regularly? Almonds? Walnuts? Cashews? Pecans? Pine Nuts? I’m in love with cashews right now. Have bags of them stored in a variety of places so I never have to go far to ward off hunger pains with a quick handful. I’ve also found a great “Paleonola” nut mixture that I mix into my greek yogurt every morning.

“Population studies have consistently supported a protective role of nuts against cardiometabolic disorders such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and we know that inflammation is a key process in the development of these diseases,” said corresponding author Ying Bao, MD, ScD, an epidemiologist in BWH’s Channing Division of Network Medicine. “Our new work suggests that nuts may exert their beneficial effects in part by reducing systemic inflammation.”

Since increasing my consumption of nuts in exchange for cookies, I’ve not seen a major weight loss, and will be curious to see how my cholesterol and triglyceride levels will change when I have them drawn again in a few months.

“After adjusting for age, medical history, lifestyle and other variables, they found that (the 120,000 Registered Nurse) participants who had consumed five or more servings of nuts per week had lower levels of (inflammatory biomarkers) than those who never or almost never ate nuts. In addition, people who substituted three servings per week of nuts in place of red meat, processed meat, eggs or refined grains had significantly lower (inflammatory biomarker) levels, as well.”

Fall-Winter 2016 Chanel Haute Couture

Chanel’s Haute Couture fashions are reminiscent of the late 70’s early 80’s this year. Gaucho’s are back, with long jacket-coats, mostly in tweeds – coarse, fine, embellished and appliqued. Midi-length skirts are definitely there, as are squared and boxy shoulders, high sitting collars and drop waists. There is a feel of a Russian Cossack or two, and the thigh high black boot is everywhere. A few sparkles thrown in with some feathers and flounce, there was much overall body coverage to this year’s presentation.

Most of all, I really liked the runway setting within mock designer-seamstress-tailor open rooms, as the fashion designers worked away, while the models strutted by. Very nice!

Butter, Our Friend

Butter. The butter dish in my childhood home always held a full cube, softened at room temperature, so soft that my little brother would swipe his finger into it, then dip his butter gloved-finger into the sugar bowl on the way to his mouth.

Butter makes everything taste better when you cook with it, add it to your baking, or layer it on tasty browned bread. Now scientific research is showing that it is not the culprit to blame your clogged arteries on any longer.

(Researchers at) “Tufts University, Health Sciences Campus (provided this) Summary: An epidemiological study analyzing the association of butter consumption with chronic disease and mortality finds that butter was only weakly associated with total mortality, not associated with heart disease, and slightly inversely associated (protective) with diabetes.” ScienceDaily

Amazingly wonderful news! Not associated with heart disease, and a protective association with diabetes, which means it could help lower the risk of diabetes. Julia Childs was right all along, enjoying life and eating everything in buttery splendor to her hearts content!

 

Healthy Diet Keeps Aging Women Mobile

Who knew that a healthy diet plays such an important role in keeping women able to take care of ourselves and able to stay mobile as we age? Mobility is being able to complete your activities of daily living. Activities include maintaining personal hygiene, being able to move without impairment to shop and cook for yourself, go for a walk, or enjoy an active social life.

“In a large study conducted by at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), researchers found an association between women who maintain a healthy diet and a reduction in the risk of developing impaired physical function as they age.”

Francine Grodstein, ScD, senior author of the study and a researcher in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at BWH made an appearance in the July issue of the Journal of Nutrition.  Her research gathered data from over 50,000 nurses from 1992 to 2008, looking at the quality of diet and the maintaining of independent mobility.

“The data indicate that women who maintained a healthier diet were less likely to develop physical impairments compared to women whose diets were not as healthy. They also found a higher intake of vegetables and fruits, a lower intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, trans-fats, and sodium, and a moderate alcohol intake, were each significantly associated with reduced rates of physical impairment. Among individual foods, the strongest relations were found for increased intakes of oranges, orange juice, apples and pears, romaine or leaf lettuce, and walnuts. However, researchers noted specific foods generally had weaker associations than the overall score, which indicates that overall diet quality is more important than individual foods.”

My Takeaway

I prefer apples, blueberries, cantaloupe and pineapple for my fruit. For veggies, it’s broccoli, asparagus, all colored salad greens (arugula, spinach, romaine, and butter lettuce), beets, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and lettuce. It’s hard to keep away from the sweets some days. I will be adding walnuts now that I know they are the nuts to keep me moving!

The Ralph Lauren Ready to Wear Collection has always been a standby for me. The fabrics are solid, sizing a little roomier for a fuller figure, and colors classic. This year’s fall collection was true to the Ralph Lauren roots:

Celebrating Accomplishments

Celebrating accomplishments is a definite must! One of my children has graduated college so let the celebration begin. I’m taking the grad (and his sister) on a little sight seeing trip we will all enjoy.

My goals for honoring and celebrating big achievements (like college graduation) – must be first rate, no worrying about diets, cost of a taxi, eating really low budget or staying somewhere cheap.

I’m saying how proud I am by treating him royally and creating an opportunity for making some fun memories. He gets to select where we go and where we eat each day, although I did do a little pre-planning as some sight seeing locations needed advanced reservations.

While I may skip a week of posting, I will share where we went and some of what we did when I return!

Prevent Blisters with Paper Tape

Feet blisters can happen to runners, walkers, workers or anyone whose shoes repetitively rub against the skin. Very painful, even leading to bleeding, and potential for infection, blisters can put an end to moving on your feet until the pain subsides and healing ensues.

An emergency medicine physician from Stanford University, Dr. Grant Lipman, looked for a method to better prevent them. He must have treated many long distance runners in his Emergency Room, or was a long distance runner himself, who wanted to find a better solution to prevent blisters from developing in the first place.

New Cell Phone App for Palpitations

Some of us have heart palpitations, or skipped beats, throughout our lives. Others, have them begin with advancing age or menopause. Recording them over a 24 hour, or longer, period so your cardiologist can determine if they are serious enough for medication or treatment has always been done with a wearable device. Usually called a Holter Monitor, it’s like wearing a cell phone with wires attached to electrodes adhered to your chest for 24 hours. No showering during the recording, and you need to record your activities throughout the day, especially when you feel your heart doing odd things in your chest. You will need to take it back to your doctors office when you’re done, as someone else is waiting to wear it (and not shower for a day), right after you.

Chocolate Prevents Insulin Resistance?

More findings about how great chocolate is for your health! A study from the University of Warwick has shown that daily consumption of chocolate – and I would guess it would be a darker chocolate  – can potentially aid in preventing insulin resistance and diabetes.

Dark Chocolate Chips!

What a wonderful finding! I love chocolate – the darker the better – and I am seeing my hemoglobin A1C beginning to climb. If you haven’t had yours checked yet, you should. HgbA1C is a measure of how well your blood sugars are consistently controlled over a period of weeks rather than a one time blood sugar measurement. I shows how you are doing overall in trending toward diabetes or staying on the road of good blood sugar control.
