Eating Chocolate a New Way to Treat A-Fib?

“A-Fib”, or atrial fibrillation, is a heart arrhythmia more common in older adults. It can be very frightening to experience, and needs treatment quickly in order for your heart to continue pumping effectively. A new study is showing the possibility of another positive side effect of eating chocolate which is to potentially calm the frequency of A-Fib episodes. I now love chocolate even more!

Dark Chocolate

“Regular chocolate consumption may be linked to a lower risk of developing the heart rhythm irregularity atrial fibrillation, also known as heart flutter, finds research published on-line in the journal Heart.

The associations seemed to be strongest for 1 weekly serving for women and between 2 and 6 weekly servings for men, the findings suggest.”

One weekly serving? How about one daily serving? That would be me, which should mean I will never have any heart arrhythmias, right?

“Atrial fibrillation affects more than 33 million people worldwide, with one in four adults likely to develop it at some point during the life course. It’s not clear exactly what causes it, but there is currently no cure, and no obvious contenders for prevention either.”

This makes chocolate the perfect treatment if it is someday shown to have curative effects. It is readily available and already shown to have anti inflammatory and other health benefits.

“Given that regular chocolate consumption, particularly of dark chocolate, has been linked to improvements in various indicators of heart health, the researchers wanted to see if it might also be associated with a lower rate of atrial fibrillation.”

Are you are milk chocolate or dark chocolate lover? I’m a fan of the dark, as it’s not so sugary sweet to me, and it really takes care of my cravings, even has a calming effect on me!
