Do we know if the order of applying our skin care products aids or deters them being absorbed fully, giving us the full benefits of our products? Dermatology researchers now tell us it is important to prioritize the order in which we apply our cleansers, serums, medications and lotions.
“Medications or treatments should be applied directly after washing your face,” said board-certified dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD. “This ensures that the medications or treatments are properly absorbed by the skin. Otherwise, people may think a product isn’t working because it’s applied in the wrong order.”
My experience goes along with what Dr. Taylor suggests as the optimum order of application:
- Cleanse the skin – I like a deep pore/surface cleanser with natural oils and anti-aging ingredients to cleanse the skin, while leaving its natural protective barrier intact.
- Apply Activators to open pores, following with Nutrient Rich Serums and any Medications. Allow the skin to absorb these products before the next steps.
- Moisturizers (with ~ 25 SPF) goes on next, taking a little time to gently massage in Eye and Lip Anti-aging Creams, and Moisturizers. Day Moisturizers should be a little lighter than those used at night. We don’t rehydrate during the night, so using a nutrient rich, high moisture night cream, including anti-aging ingredients, will provide greatest benefits.
- Makeup application last. If the skin has been regularly exfoliated, the need for heavy foundation and powders should not exist, as your skin should look fresh, vibrant and radiant without heavy makeup.
If we used a heavy moisturizer first, than serum next, the serum would sit on top of the skin and not be absorbed. Using this format of skin care application should provide the best results and highest benefits from the products you use, and also limit your chances of skin reaction to medications and anti-aging ingredients.
The skin care I have used for the past 8 years, with the greatest results and highest benefits for my youthful, radiant skin care is by Apriori Beauty, the Celloxylin Skin Care Line.
