Which Hidden Food Allergies Might Be Making You Gain Weight?

food allergiesDid you know that healthy foods you eat every day may be causing you to gain weight? Neither did I, until my naturopathic doctor offered me a six week program of eliminating certain foods while drinking a detox shake for three weeks. After that, I would add back the foods, one at a time, for three days each, to see how my body reacts, which can show sensitivity and allergies. Seems that eating the same foods often, over a long period of time, can cause our body to become allergic to them, which then causes inflammation within, and a host of not so healthy responses like autoimmune diseases and the like.

A common scenario is an adult with a low-grade food allergy to say, gluten, who never pinpoints the cause of his misery. His symptoms are vague (bloating, constipation, weight gain) and his exposure is frequent (breakfast, lunch and dinner), so the connection is murky. And, over years, the hidden allergy takes a toll on the immune system. The result of an overworked immune system is everything from weight gain to irritable bowel syndrome.”

I didn’t do too well with the detox shakes, so I nixed them and am just doing the food elimination diet. I’ve had a notion my body has been trying to tell me not to eat some of these for a while – especially the nasty headache I’ve been getting after eating certain chocolates. Sigh. But after gaining four pounds in two days from eating bread, it was time to stop the downward spiral in order to get truly healthy.

Avoid the top food allergens, gluten and dairy. If you don’t feel a sense of relief from nixing dairy and gluten, you may need to take the elimination diet one step further by cutting out the top food allergens: gluten, dairy, corn, eggs, soy, nuts, nightshades (tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes and eggplant), citrus and yeast (baker’s, brewer’s yeast and fermented products like vinegar). Try this for a full six weeks. That is enough time to feel better and notice a change. When you reintroduce a top food allergen, eat it at least two to three times a day for three days to see if you notice a reaction. If you do, note the food and eliminate it for 90 days.food allergy citrus

If you are overweight or if you suffer from inflammatory diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, the potential health benefits of discovering and uprooting hidden food allergies cannot be overstated. Remember, food is your greatest ally in helping to prevent and treat illness…. there is a growing body of medical literature illuminating the intimate relationship between the gut, food and illness.

Here are the foods I’m eliminating – gluten, yeast, daily, eggs, chocolate, grapefruit, corn, soy, tomatoes and peanuts. This has taken a bit of creativity and adjustment to find foods I like, that taste good, and keep me full, to replace those I’m doing away with. I’m surprised how much dairy I consume each day! Stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s make it easier to do so. Almond butter is great with celery and apples, and olive oil with balsamic vinegar is an excellent dressing for just about anything. In the four days I’ve made the changes, I’ve shed three pounds and already feel less bloated and more energy. Who’s going to do this with me and get yourself healthier, too?
