What Do Optimists Have That Pessimists Don’t?

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity. An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” – Winston Churchill

How maStepping stones by Anne (2010)ny pessimists do your know that live exactly that way?  Those of us optimists shake our heads in wonder! If you are a pessimist, no offense here, really.  But, I would like to know, do you really enjoy life? Do you find beauty, joy and satisfaction in life?  No, I am not a pessismist hater, not by a long shot.  I have gone to school with, worked with and known many.  They see life in such a way that it is predictable and sometimes humorous.

Here’s a great example – my family attended our church’s annual Thanksgiving service.  Druing the service, we were given an opportunity to come up to the microphone and take one minute to share what we are thankful for.  The first gentleman to speak gave a long laundry list of all the things that had gone wrong in his life over the past year, taking more than his allotted time and finishing with, “but I am thankful that the Lord has brought me to this church.”  During his dismal “telling”, my teenage son leaned over to me and said “What a Downer!”  As we quietly chuckled, I thought about how his few moments really brought in the clouds, and what an depressing effect his words had on everyone there. Fortunately, those after him had more uplifting “thanks” to leave us with!

Do you know many successful people who are pessimists?  I can’t think of one!  If Winston Churchill is right, the pessimist adds obstacles to every opportunity.  The good news is our thought patterns can be changed and we can mSwiss Alps by Bipul Keshriake a conscious effort to begin to see life in a more positive way!

“An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”  You bet!!  It is a very rewarding and satisfying feeling, when encountering a roadblock along life’s path, to figure out how to go around, under, over or just plain through it so as to continue to achieve your goals.  Obstacles take all forms – they can be people, situations, weather, lack of resources, illness, missed opportunities, you name it.  It’s the person that can keep his/her mind focused, and actions disciplined to figure out and adapt a to new course to proceed upon, that will reach their goal.  If you are leading a group, team, family or company, this is a very important quality that you must become skillful at in order to accomplish the vision set forth.

I like to make obstacles my stepping stones.  How?  By always looking for the new path to chart to my goals, keeping my eyes open to new opportunities that present themselves along the way.

The next time something unexpected comes up in your day, take a moment to think about adapting in a different way that leaves you ready for a new adventure!
